December 29, 2022Delta Hospital in Ladner, British Columbia, is a well rounded facility, albeit on a small scale. The 80 bed facility serves the community of North Delta as well as a few Tsawwassen neighbors and the nearby delta. There are twelve observation unit beds and seven fast track bays in the event of a major accident. In addition to medical services, the facility is also home to Mountain View Manor, a 92 bed residential care facility.
Other than the name, Delta Hospital is a low-key operation with 580 staff members, including doctors, nurses and support staff. In terms of emergency services, the emergency department boasts seven fast track bays and ten acute care monitored beds. These are manned by about a dozen physicians on a regular or casual basis. Aside from the medical aspects of the hospital, the aforementioned facility is also home to the Delta Hospice Society, a non-profit organization which provides comfort care and end-of-life planning to patients and their families.
In terms of medical research, the Delta Hospital boasts an impressively large lab space and a research and development program to boot. This includes the impressive looking two story Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building, which was completed in March 2020 and contains state of the art equipment. It is also the home of the BC Children’s Hospital’s medical laboratory.
In terms of medical devices, the Delta Hospital boasts a robust laboratory for the imaging of the body, a high-end CT scanner, and a small but growing number of ultrasound units. The hospital also plays a part in the education of medical students and residents alike. Some of the most advanced technology in the region is found here.
For the most part, the most important function of the hospital is a first-class emergency department with an impressive slew of diagnostic tools and equipment. In addition to the most basic emergency services, the facility provides some of the most technologically advanced imaging techniques in the province. Another notable fact is that the facility is one of the few hospitals in the region to be designated as a Level V trauma center. This is the highest level of trauma care in the province, which is a pretty big deal given the number of car accidents in the area.
While the CBC ratings are not for everyone, they do provide a guideline for Canadians as to what they should expect from their local health care providers. However, some of the hospitals with the lowest ratings may be doing the best job in areas that were not deemed relevant by the CBC. Thus, the name of the game is figuring out which hospitals are the most qualified to deliver the best possible care to your loved ones. Of course, if the hospital in question is too far away for a walk, ride or a cab, then you may want to check out the many transportation options available in your own backyard.
